07 Aug PPE HEROES – HELPING DRESS MEDICS
RECOGNISING THOSE WHO HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
As the Coronavirus pandemic took grip and the need for PPE surged unknown heroes stepped out of the dark and stepped up to help provide for those on the frontline. Helping Dress Medics is one of those groups of heroes, made up of approximately 150 volunteers based all over the country, many of whom are professional costume designers and makers. Coordinated by Dulcie Scott a costume supervisor, Helping Dress Medics used their expert skills to produce scrubs for hundreds of NHS staff in dire need.
Frontline workers were working more and changing scrubs more to prevent contamination which meant a two month wait for the delivery of more scrubs. As theatres closed and production was halted on most film and television, Dulcie and her army of volunteers did not rest on their laurels. The team liaised directly with hospital staff in their local areas, taking advice about what they needed so the scrubs they were making were suitable. The group also used their professionals contacts to purchase materials at the most reasonable prices they could but of course there was still a considerable cost. A GoFundMe page was created to raise money to purchase materials raising over £100,000.
As safety and PPE experts we understand more than anyone about the need for appropriate protective clothing, to see a group of professional costume designers and makers use their skills in the fight against Covid-19 is truly inspiring. HSE People is proud to honour Helping Dress Medics and Dulcie Scott for their hard work, you truly are PPE Heroes!
There is no longer a deficit in the supply of scrubs so the group are now making face coverings for various charities and would still appreciate donations to help buy fabric, elastic and postage. You can donate to help them via their GoFundMe page.
